The first airfield of Mahón Airport was constructed in 1936 and used for military purposes until 1949. After that, the Ministry of Aviation started operating civil domestic flights the same year. Mahon Airport officially received its name in 1965 and saw a rise in passenger numbers during the ‘60s. For this reason, the runway was extended, and the new terminal building was constructed in 1969. Because of the airport’s official operation, the island started receiving more visitors, and in 1970, passenger numbers doubled. The airport’s areas were expanded, and new infrastructure and improvements were made in order to accommodate the passengers’ increasing needs. The new terminal building was first opened to the public in 1988 but has been refurbished and enlarged since then. The terminal consists of two floors: the upper floor has check-in desks, shops and restaurants, departure halls, and two boarding areas. One boarding area is used for domestic flights open year-round, and another for international flights only open during the peak season. The ground floor is used for arrivals and baggage reclaim.
